Celebrate Memorial Day with these Washtenaw County events

WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI – With many Memorial Day events canceled over the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Washtenaw County is once again gearing up to observe the holiday honoring fallen soldiers in combat with a variety of parades and other similar events.

Memorial Day itself is May 30, but events are taking place throughout the weekend to honor the day.

Ann Arbor

The Glacier Highlands Neighborhood Association is holding its first Memorial Day Parade since the pandemic began on Monday, May 30.

The parade, open to the public, will start at Greenbriar Park, 3705 Frederick Drive, and end at Glacier Highlands Park, 3600 Larchmont Drive. The streets will close at 9:00 a.m., with the parade starting at 10:00 a.m.

The event includes a parade of children’s bikes, a ceremony in the park, food trucks and a Leslie Nature Center exhibit. Food trucks include Grill Father BBQ, Kona Ice, Tacos El Mariachi Loco, and Poverino. Prizes will be awarded for patriotic bikes, strollers and carts.

Peace Ann Arbor, 8260 Jackson Road, is holding its biannual Unified Outdoor Worship Service at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 29. Visitors are encouraged to bring a blanket or chair.

Burgers, hot dogs and other lunch items will be served after the service.

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 310 is hosting several events throughout the weekend.

At approximately 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 29, visitors are encouraged to participate in a take-out picnic followed by a retirement ceremony and the dedication of several American flags. The event takes place at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Ypsilanti.

The group also meets at 10 a.m. at the Saline Fire Department, 205 E. Michigan Ave., to march or participate in the town parade. At 1 p.m., they will gather at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Ypsilanti for a ceremony honoring both those on the memorial and to dedicate engraved bricks to recently deceased members.

Saline is holding its Memorial Day Parade beginning at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 30. The parade will begin on US 12 and Harris Street and end at Oakwood Cemetery, followed by a ceremony.

The Rotary Club of Dexter holds a Memorial Day Parade beginning at 10 a.m. on May 30. The parade, which begins on Ann Arbor Street near Peace Park and runs down Main Street to the end of Alpine Street, will be followed by a memorial service at Monument Park.

The Dexter Knights of Columbus is hosting their annual Grilled Chicken fundraiser for charities that support people with developmental disabilities on Monday, May 30.

The drive-in fundraiser at 8265 Dexter Chelsea Road, is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and includes a half grilled chicken with baked potato, coleslaw, bun and cold drink. Meals are $12 each.
