HEWITT, Texas (Fox 44) — Nearly 100 cars drove to Hewitt on Saturday to support Hunger Free MISD.
The program is for Midway students who are food insecure. They send backpacks full of food home with these students on weekends and holidays.
“We personally have children, and we hope that our community will come together and help us if we were in need if this time comes for us, and we just want to make sure that we are doing the best we can. can capitalize on our resources and be able to give back,” said Kacie Birkes, communications coordinator for Hewitt Chamber.
Last year, they raised $2,200 in food donations as well as $5,800 in monetary donations.
One participant says he has been interested in cars for 29 years.
“I think the most interesting and unique part is how people put so much time and effort into each car to make each vehicle the way they want it,” he said.
For Hilbert Lopez and Rick Gutierrez, cars are part of their family.
“From my uncle to my dad, they did it in their youth,” Gutierrez said. “It’s something that’s been put in us, and it’s something we’re doing to follow in their footsteps.
The goal for the event in the coming years is to involve more bikes and make it even bigger and better.
