Dwayne Johnson Netflix movie Red Notice looks to blend action and comedy with the spy thriller genre – much like classic 90s actioner True Lies.
The upcoming Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson movie Red Notice is extremely reminiscent of classic 90s action comedy True Lies. Early indications suggest that the new Netflix film will feature a similar tone and blend of different genres. Given both the contemporary success and subsequent legacy of James Cameron’s earlier movie, this can only be a good thing for audiences.
Although Red Notice is not coming out until November, it’s already clear that the movie will be a light-hearted blockbuster. Starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, the movie represents the third collaboration between Johnson and writer/director Rawson Marshall Thurber. The pair have previously come together for the 2016 and 2018 hits Central Intelligence and Skyscraper, providing a clear indication about the tone of this new project. The film has an estimated budget of between $160 and $200 million, with star Gadot allegedly making $20 million for her role.
On the one hand, an original movie featuring the talents of three celebrated stars is certainly something to look forward to. However, perhaps what makes Red Notice an even more compelling prospect is that it seems to bear uncanny similarities with classic genre flicks – including the much-loved Arnold Schwarzenegger smash hit True Lies. In fact, despite the distinct differences between the two films, the influence of True Lies is immediately apparent from only a cursory glance at the Red Notice trailer.
An obvious similarity is the stature of the two films’ leading men. Where True Lies had the unmistakable muscular presence of Schwarzenegger, Red Notice is clearly going down a similar route with the casting of the equally brawny Johnson. In fact, given his performances in successful action flicks such as Rampage and several Fast and Furious films, there is a strong case to be made that The Rock is the next action franchise king, following larger-than-life 80s stars such as Sylvester Stallone and Schwarzenegger himself.
Not only are Schwarzenegger and Johnson physically similar, but there is a clear correlation between their roles in the two movies. Both Red Notice and True Lies center around a central spy narrative – although, admittedly, True Lies also incorporates a secret identity sub-plot. However, casting two of the most physically unique actors in roles where they are, on paper at least, supposed to blend in gives both movies a similar tongue-in-cheek feel. Asking any audience to believe that Schwarzenegger and Johnson would ever be able to melt effortlessly into the background, for instance, is really stretching the realms of credulity.
These obvious similarities to True Lies suggest that the filmmakers behind Red Notice are at the very least aware of the earlier film’s lasting legacy. Whether there are any additional parallels remains to be seen. However, even a cursory nod to a classic, coupled with an all-star cast and seasoned director, means that Red Notice has all the ingredients to become a success in its own right.
