Series of events organized to celebrate the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Bandipora

The Bandipora district administration celebrated the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Sunday. The day saw various programs led by Nasha Mukh Bharat Abhiyan and SVEEP including a bicycle rally, student rally, painting competition, sketches and other awareness-raising activities.

The program was organized by the Bandipora District Administration in conjunction with the Bandipora District Electoral Office, ICDS, Social Welfare and other departments. The program began with a flag raising ceremony for a bike rally in addition to a gathering of SCC students and cadets from the Bandipora Mini Secretariat. The rally passed through Bandipora’s main market and culminated at Wullar Vintage Park Garoora Bandipora with the message to make Bandipora drug-free.

The main function was held at Wullar Vintage Garoora Park which saw the participation of a large gathering of local youths, students and district administration officials. Chairman Bandipora District Development Council Ab. Gani, Deputy Chairman of District Development Council, Kousar Shafeeq, Additional Bandipora District Development Commissioner Mohammad Ashraf Hakak, Additional Assistant Commissioner, Waseem Raja, DLSA Secretary Fariqa Nazir, DSWO Ubaid Ahmad , Padmashri Faisal Ali and senior officers from the district administration were present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Bandipora District Development Council Chairman Ab. Gani emphasized the role of society as a whole in eradicating the threat of drugs. He said coordination and cooperation are key to making society drug-free.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Dr. Owais Ahmed, praised the participation of students and youth in these programs. He advised students to use time wisely for constructive purposes and focus on their careers.

He called for joint efforts of various stakeholders to eradicate the threat of drugs. He emphasized the slogan “Say no to drugs” in order to achieve the goal of a drug-free society. He said society as a whole and the family have an important role to play against drug abuse.

Dr. Umair from the drug treatment center discussed various issues regarding the drug treatment center. He sought the cooperation of the public to eradicate the threat of drugs. DLSA Secretary Fariqa Nazir shed light on various laws related to drug addiction.

She said anyone involved in drugs will face serious legal consequences and insisted on staying away from drugs to eradicate this menace. Speaking on the occasion, lawyer Syed Mujtaba focused on psychological counseling for people involved in drug addiction.

He said emergency aid, rehabilitation and social integration are essential for those involved in the drug threat. He also highlighted the role of educational institutions and religious institutions in eradicating the threat of drugs.

Journalist Farzana Mumtaz also discussed the role of various agencies in eradicating the drug menace and highlighted the role of family as a major player in eradicating the drug menace.

Dy SP HQ Mohammad Shafat discussed various issues relating to illicit drug trafficking and the role of the police. He urged religious leaders and educational institutions to educate students about the harmful effects of drugs in order to eradicate the threat of drugs from society. He urged attendees to take the message of “fighting drugs” to every corner of the district.

The main function at Wullar Vantage Park was coordinated and anchored by Mr. Altaf Ahmad Mir, Coordinator, DC Office Bandipora. Similar programs to celebrate the day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking were also held in other blocks in the district including Allosa, Ganstan and Gurez. At Gurez, the function was chaired by SDM Gurez Dr. Mudasir. A rally with the message of making society drug-free was organized by SDM Gurez.
