BOONE – September is Library Card Enrollment Month, a time when the Watauga County Public Library joins with the American Library Association and libraries across the country in reminding parents, caregivers and students that enrolling in a library card is the first step on the path to achieving their goals and lifelong learning.
There is nothing more empowering than purchasing a library card, the Watauga County Public Library said in a press release. With access to technology, media resources, and educational programs, a library card gives people of all ages the tools they need to be successful.
In September, the Watauga County Public Library will be holding a library card registration raffle for those who obtain a card. The library said it was grateful to Sweet Frog, Chic-fil-A, Domino’s Pizza and Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff for their prize donations for the drawing.
At the Watauga County Public Library, community members can find a wide variety of educational resources and activities. These include outdoor storytelling hours, treasure hunts, a Lego club and StoryWalks® as well as virtual programming. A card gives you access to e-books, e-audiobooks, and e-magazines for all ages in addition to printing.
NC Live can be accessed with a library card anywhere there is an Internet connection. Students attending Watauga County schools can use their student ID number to view up to ten books or audiobooks without a fine. It also provides access to electronic resources.

Coming to the library, the Watauga County Public Library asks community members to wear a mask when in the building. They have disposable masks while supplies last.
This year Marley Dias, Founder of # 1000BlackGirlBooks, Author and Executive Producer, takes on a new role as Honorary Chair of Library Card Sign-Up Month. In his new role, Dias will promote the value of libraries and encourage everyone to get their own library card.
Since 1987, Library Card Enrollment Month has been held every September to mark the start of the school year. During the month, the American Library Association and libraries work together in a national effort to ensure that every child signs up for their own library card.
